5. Tango de Vartsika 6:14

Vartiokylä or "Vartsika" as we say, is the most green suburb in Helsinki, where also used to be a popular outdoor dance stage. When the Finnish tango dance ended in this outdoor dance stage, (and maybe the night also continued somewhere), a wanderer in the small hours enjoyed the amazing songs of the nightingales in Vartsika.

The outdoor dance stage doesn't exist any more, but nightingales and blackbirds still sing in Vartsika, here creating nice rhythmic counterpoints with the tune.
Birds recorded in Vartsika 28.5.2022 11.45 pm. This tune is truly a Finnish klezmertango.

Vartiokylässä eli Vartsikassa Raitamäentiellä oli 30- ja 40-luvulla tanssilava. Lava sijoittui mäen päälle ja tanssilavan viereiseen kuuseen, kohtuullisen korkealle nostettu kaiutin levittikin tanssien rahisevan gramofonimusiikin varsin laajalle alueelle – ei ehkä niinkään kaikkien iloksi. Tango soi.

Kun tanssit päättyivät ja iltaa oli ehkä jatkettukin, aamuÜinen kävelijä kevyt kosketus vielä ihollaan, sai nauttia Vartsikan satakielten laulusta. Lavaa ei enää ole, mutta alkukesän kesäÜinä satakielten ja mustarastaiden laulu Vartsikassa edelleen täyttää ilman.

Linnut äänitetty Vartiokylässä metsäpolulla 28.5.2022 klo 23.45. "Suomalainen klezmertango."
