The theme of this album was already smouldering in my mind right after the first album; the Finn abroad and, on the other hand, the foreigner in Finland. Foreignness, migration and the rather humorous refractions of the monocle through which all these things are seen. Acoustic sounds all around us that we don't normally perceive as elements of rhythmic music. Stories of people whose lives led them to something touching or amusing.

The music grew slowly, as though by stealth. I didn't want to force it or plan its direction in advance. The stories came to me unexpectedly, but I knew that each one was the way it had to be.
"In Strange Lands" is Finnish klezmer (suomiklezmer), a kind of Nordic blues - difficult to pigeonhole, and that's all to the good. Klezmer world music matched with slightly naïve Finnish melodic traditions and a touch of the strong Finnish melodist Toivo Kärki. Not fashionably sparkling perhaps in the consensus of the times, but honestly going its own way - in this, the golden age of the cover.
And you really cannot lose sight of the personal involvement and narrative that my excellent fellow musicians add to all this, with their own musical colours.
