11. Kontula 5:49

Kontula's large suburb was built in the 1960s, as an alternative to the cramped city-centre living. It was reported: "More and more people are able to move from the noise and dust of the city center to the fresh air and feel of nature."

Well, that's not how it went. After the idealistic beginning, Kontula made headlines due to negative news, and often even the smallest negative thing was exaggerated - there were always raving youths and even drug dealing.

1986 Kontula got a metro connection - the adjacent station Mellunmäki is actually the northernmost metro station in the world - and the value of the neighborhood started to rise again.

Today, Kontula is a fresh, multicultural and peaceful neighborhood in Eastern Helsinki, where the history of the Finnish neighborhoods continues to flow.

Kontulan iso lähiö rakennettiin 1960-luvulla, vaihtoehdoksi keskusta-asumisen ahtaudelle. Uutisoitiin: ”Yhä useammat pääsevät muuttamaan keskustan melusta ja pölystä raittiiseen ilmaan ja luonnontuntumaan.”

No, ihan noin se ei kuitenkaan mennyt. Idealistisen alun jälkeen Kontula pääsi lehtien otsikoihin kielteisten uutisten vuoksi, ja monesti pienimmästäkin negatiivisesta asiasta kirjoitettiin liioitellen - oli hurjastelevaa nuorisoa ja huumekauppaakin.

1986 Kontulaan saatiin metroyhteys - viereinen asema Mellunmäki onkin maailman pohjoisin metroasema – ja lähiön arvostus alkoi nousta uudelleen.

Nykyään Kontula on raikas, monikulttuurinen ja rauhallinen lähiö Itä-Helsingissä, jossa suomalaisen lähiön historiavirta jatkaa kulkuaan.
